Summer is coming!  And it's time to start planning our summer sewing!

Summer is a time for fun in the sun, but it can also be a time of frustration when it comes to finding clothes that are comfortable, stylish, and affordable.  But, when you have some basic sewing skills, you can easily create your own summer wardrobe that is both functional and fashionable. Here are my tips for setting your summer sewing started;

Choose light weight fabrics

When it comes to summer clothing, you'll want to choose lightweight, breathable fabrics that will keep you cool and comfortable in the heat. Cotton, linen, rayon/viscose, and silk are all great choices for summer clothes. Avoid heavy fabrics like wool and polyester, which can trap heat and make you feel uncomfortable.

Pick the right patterns

When selecting patterns for summer clothes, look for designs that are loose-fitting and flowy. Tight-fitting clothes can be uncomfortable and hot in the summer heat. Also, look for patterns that are easy to sew and require minimal alterations.  Our Wrap Skirt pattern and Everyday Amazing Shift Dress pattern are beautiful made up in viscose or cotton lawn.

Have fun with colors and patterns

Summer is a time to have fun and experiment with bright colors and bold patterns. Using these types of fabrics can give your summer wardrobe a pop of color and make your clothes stand out. Florals, stripes, and geometric prints are all great choices for summer clothes.

Practice proper fit

Proper fit is essential when it comes to sewing summer clothes. Clothes that are too tight can be uncomfortable and restrict your movements, while clothes that are too loose can look sloppy. Make sure to take accurate measurements and adjust your patterns accordingly to ensure a perfect fit.  If you struggle with fit, consider coming to our Pattern Drafting Workshop, where you will learn how to adjust patterns to create your own designs and perfect the fit of your patterns.

Sewing your summer wardrobe is a great way to stay cool, comfortable, and stylish during the hot summer months. By choosing the right fabrics, patterns, and accessories, you can create a wardrobe that is uniquely yours. Just remember to keep it simple, practice proper fit, and be patient, and you'll end up with clothes that you love to wear all summer long.
