Crafty Bloggers Club: Vicki's Morris Blazer

Hello Everyone! So here’s my first blog post for the lovely girls over at Crafty Sew and So. I was so chuffed to be chosen to be part of the new blogger team and being a local Leicestershire girl I quickly hot footed it over to the shop to chose what I was going to make for my first blog post.
Obviously we’ve had an absolutely amazing summer by UK standards and as much as it’s been great to sew up all those dreamy summer fabrics my immediate thought was to head over to the jerseys with my winter wardrobe planning hat firmly on.
While chit chatting away about all things sewing my eye was drawn to the most gorgeous and season appropriate rusty orange double knit. I’m very much a blue person but I’m trying to add in a few different colours to brighten up my wardrobe and orange is just the perfect colour to pair with blue! So with fabric chosen it was on to the pattern.
I would describe the jersey as a reasonably thick medium to heavy weight. It doesn’t have a massive amount of drape so wouldn’t work with floaty gathered dresses but as it’s quite weighty it hangs beautifully and would suit patterns that require a bit of structure.
A pattern that’s been on my wish list for a while is the Grainline Studio Morris Blazer which can be sewn up in knits or woven fabrics and I’d recently spotted that Sarah was wearing a gorgeous jersey version at the Sewing Weekender. So here is the lovely bundle I came away with!
I was between sizes so I went with the upper size and cut out a straight size 14 as I wanted to be able to wear it with chunky jumpers. Although I did have to adjust the shoulders a fair bit so may size down to the 12 next time. I also lengthened the sleeves to full length as I don’t like having chilly wrists!!
The fabric was a dream to sew with and didn’t move around or stretch as it was sewn. The make was pretty straight forward and I whipped up most of the seams on the overlocker but you could easily sew up on a normal machine as the fabric doesn’t really fray so would be fine to just finish with a standard zig zag stitch.
There’s a fair amount of top stitching to do with this pattern which I’m not usually a massive fan of. I’m a total perfectionist so didn’t want to mess it up at the last stage but I took my time to make sure it was all nice and even and thankfully I was pretty happy with the end result. It’s actually a really nice finishing touch and helps to show off the angles of the lapel and bottom hem. I also love the angled bottom hem, it makes the jacket stand out and be a little bit different, particularly being made up in a plain fabric.
I finished the jacket just over a week ago and I’ve already worn it quite a few times including for a pretty windswept walk around a local park so please excuse the scruffy hair photo! It’s perfect to throw on with jeans for this time of year. I’ve also worn it to work paired up with a skirt and boots for a dressier look.
I did have visions of going out to do an Autumnal photo shoot it the woods skipping through falling leaves although my husband had other ideas but I did manage to find some conkers that match perfectly, along with my little fox pin badge.
